A speed test on a phone next to the router measures the best conditions in the house. Your television is somewhere else, usually behind furniture, often on the crowded 2.4GHz band, competing with every other device.
Streaming does not need peak speed so much as consistency, and Wi-Fi is inconsistent by nature. A connection that averages 80 Mbps but briefly dips to 3 will stutter, and no speed test will ever show you that dip.
The fix: run an ethernet cable to the television or streaming box. This single change resolves more buffering complaints than everything else on this list combined. Cause 2: Something Else in the House
A console downloading an update, a phone backing up photos, someone else on a video call. These consume bandwidth in bursts and your stream is competing with them for a share.
The fix: check before blaming the provider. If every channel degrades simultaneously, the problem is almost certainly inside your house rather than upstream — a single provider-side issue rarely affects every channel at once.
Cause 3: Your Buffer Is Too Small
Live streams arrive as short segments downloaded slightly ahead of when you need them. That reserve is the buffer, and its default size is usually tuned for speed of channel switching rather than stability.
The fix: increase it in your player settings. You trade a second or two of delay when changing channel for materially steadier playback — during live sport that is almost always the right bargain.
Cause 4: The Wrong Decoder
Your device converts compressed video into pixels either on dedicated hardware or in software. Channels encoded slightly unusually can sail through one path and stutter on the other.

Cause 5: Peak-Time Congestion Beyond Your Door
Some connections are noticeably slower between roughly 7pm and 11pm because the local network is shared and contended. Your line has not changed; the number of people using it has.
How to tell: run the same test at 3pm and 9pm. A large gap points here, and the fix is your provider or your package rather than anything in your control. It is worth knowing before you conclude a streaming service is at fault.
Cause 6: Genuinely Not Enough Bandwidth
Last, because it is rarest. If your line genuinely delivers under 10 Mbps at the times you watch, 4K is not realistic and Full HD may struggle with more than one stream.
This is real but uncommon on modern connections, and it is worth eliminating the five causes above before spending money on an upgrade that may change nothing.
How to Test Properly
Most people test in a way that cannot reveal their actual problem. Do it like this instead:
- Test on the device you watch on, in its actual position — not on a phone next to the router.
- Test at the time you watch, usually evening, not on a quiet afternoon.
- Test twice: once over Wi-Fi and once on a cable. The gap between those two numbers is the size of your Wi-Fi problem.
- Watch for consistency rather than the headline figure. Brief dips cause stutters that averages hide.
